Changes in Coaching Duties and Responsibilities

Although it is now commonplace for some sports teams to have multiple full-time coaches and extensive support staff, less than 30 years ago coaches shuffled multiple roles.

Along with the evolution of coaching roles has been a transformation within athletics itself from a more recreational-based philosophy to a more competition-driven focus. With this shift in philosophy, Oregon coaches began to assume more responsibilities within one sport and team. The passing of Title IX dictated further change, inevitably affecting the duties of women’s coaches the most.

As sports at Oregon were shaping up during the early 20th century, prominent coaches juggled many duties. The luxury of leading one sport was not a possibility. The roles these leaders played reflected the position of athletics throughout the country. In these early days, education was the first priority, giving sports less importance.

As the Athletic Department began to establish an infrastructure for intercollegiate sports on campus, the success of the teams escalated. With these new successes in the competitive arena, changes in coaching duties inevitably followed.

Leading the Entourage
As the last 30 years of Oregon’s sports heritage played out, Oregon established itself as a top competitor in the Pac-10 as well as within the entire NCAA. This, however, has required increased commitment from coaches and support staff.
